The Origin of Words

This is about writing; a broken nation; a cold floor; long flights; also loss, hope and fear, creation.  First, loss.  Sixteen years ago I spent an entire month sitting on the floor of a small apartment in the Jewish district of Kiev.  I was thinking, as simple as that, although most adults assume that right is reserved to them.  My grandfather kept standing up to change the channel on our black and white TV, while my grandmother cooked in the kitchen.  My parents were nowhere to be found.    Next, hope and fear, two inseparable lovers for the next thirteen years of my life. &nb

Life 2I was sitting by the lake one day. Warm rocks, blue skies, green grass, strange breeze. A midsummer breeze that catches your heart just as you are taking a breath. And then you struggle, as your lungs become icy and your skin is still burning hot. And then it passes and you forget. You forget it was ever there.  I was sitting in my room one day. Dim lights, clean sheets, bare walls, strange boy. A boy that catches your heart just as you think it will never happen. And then you struggle, as your feet rise above the ground and your head is still leveled. And then it passes but you don’t forget. You don’t forget that he there.
